Our History

Chapin Home for the Aging’s rich history of over 150 years has truly shaped us into the community we are today. Since we opened our doors for the first time back in 1869, Chapin Home has dedicated itself to making a real difference to seniors, family members and the local Jamaica Hills community.

The Story of Chapin Home

Chapin Home for the Aging was founded in Manhattan in 1869 by Mrs. Hannah Chapin‚ wife of the celebrated orator and pastor Edwin Chapin. Twenty other dedicated women joined in an enterprise based on Dr. Chapin’s philosophy of “What is your need‚ not your creed.” Chapin has been serving the New York City/Long Island community at its Jamaica Hills location since 1910. Chapin has grown to a 220–bed Skilled Nursing Facility with a 50–registrant Adult Day Health Care Center.

A Vision of the Future

When Chapin Home welcomed its first residents in 1869, Mrs. Hannah and Dr. Edwin Chapin had a bold vision for the future of their organization. From the outset, Chapin Home for the Aging was driven to provide each resident with the excellent, dignified care they deserved.
